CURIOUS?

I’m no Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot or Nancy Drew. Yet, these fictional detectives have a penchant for sleuthing just like I do. Besides being a curious sleuth at (he)art, exploring interestingness is my side gig. Curiosity gifts me wow-worthy moments. So, Curious Sleuth is my tagger moniker as a yarn graffiti artist describing me better than any professional title in my bio ever could.

Stacey aka Curious Sleuth

Transmedia Storyteller > Craftivist | Yarn Graffitist | Digital Artist

Curious Sleuth describes me better than any professional title in my bio ever could. Exploring interestingness, clew by clue, positions me as a transmedia storyteller. I weave my roles as craftivist, yarn graffitist, digital artist into an integrated collaborative thread.

My creative practice was grounded in graphic design and art direction, shaping brand identities and communication concepts. That strategic vision has carried into my craftivism practice.

My subversive hook challenges conventional fibre handcrafting traditions, engaging crochet as a catalyst for craftivism, dialogue, healing, storythreading and meaningful change.

With over two decades of experience, I co-create by threading communities together through immersive gatherings and installations in South Africa and internationally. My handmade craftivism artworks were shown at yarn bomb festivals in Italy, and I’ve joined collaborations in Berlin, London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Brussels.

My ongoing story collection, Our Threads are Tellers of Us at this Stitch in Time, threads fibre handcrafting with gentle protest for social, political, and environmental change.

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Digital Arts researching the interplay between craftivism and artificial intelligence, and how we preserve our humanness in the age of AI. I hold a Master of Arts in Applied Drama. My research contributes to the future of digital humanities.

Thread Count

A craftivist’s interthreading of human and machine in the age of AI through the (de)coded datasets of crochet and computation. Literally, “thread count” is the number of warp and weft threads woven into cloth. Metaphorically, “thread” represents fibre yarn and “count” represents digital data. Two information networks, one made by hand, the other generated by machine. Craftivism lives in their tension: handmade stories, algorithmically remixed. There are no polished ideas, only conversation sparkers. My thoughts, extracted from notebook scribbles, are a glimpse behind-the-scenes of my formal academic thinking as a Ph.D. candidate in Digital Arts. Let’s be curious sleuths together.
