Hug a Tree

Tree-huggers paused to notice the majestic beauty of ancient beings, trees that sustain life on Earth. Yarn graffiti wrapped their trunks in softness and vibrant colour, transforming the courtyard into a whimsical public space. Each crochet stitch in the tree wraps reminded us to stop rushing past, pause, and gather to share threads that are tellers of us.

Throughout the changing seasons, these Olive trees have watched as we sit under their canopy of green leaves in spring, their shade during summer’s warmth, their autumn colours, and winter branches. Amidst the urban concrete, they offer us nourishment, grounding, and mindful reconnection with nature. At this stitch in time, our human bond with trees is vital as the world grapples deforestation and environmental degradation. Hugging trees offers us all a healing yarn balm.

“I felt held by the tree’s deeply rooted wisdom. When I let go of the hug, I felt lighter, as if the tree had reminded me how to stay, how to draw nourishment from darkness, and reach for the light.” – Stacey aka Curious Sleuth

The tree wraps were made in community by our Craftivism Club, handcrafted in crochet and knit. All the crochet flowers were recycled and reused from the Garden of Yarns. Visitors were invited to pick a flower as a gift to keep. When the temporary installation was removed, the wraps were washed and repurposed as baby blankets. The Baby Box Project gifted them to moms in public hospitals, bringing warmth and care to newborns.

The courtyard is adjacent to The Bioscope in Joburg. The project aligned with their Knit in Cinema event. This is our gallery of memories.
